Man Camp Revisited

I just read some of that last post. I totally meant ramble alert, but I was in a hurry. It was quite random too.

Ok, Man Camp.  Here's my proposal:  We each suggest what we want in the camp and maybe each suggest three spots. Then we vote or reduce possibilities by simple deduction of what we want, what's feasible, time, weather, money for gas or entry, etc. Any thoughts or other ways we should do it?

Another thing for us to consider: who can drive?  I wouldn't mind, but the vehicle is in the shop and I honestly have no idea when it will get out. Transmission problems--the joy.

  1. I don't care much where we go or what we do - I propose we answer a couple questions first:
    - Car camping, or backpacking/similar?
    - Are there any time constraints (must be back by 2:00 PM, whatever)?
    - How far are we willing to go? 1 hour drive, 2 hour drive, etc.?
    - What vehicles will we be taking? Do we need to consider paved access only?

With this, my suggestions are as follow:
    - Tuweap/Toroweap (http://www.nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/tuweep.htm) definitely need some trucks or other high-clearance vehicles to get here, but the pictures look amazing and I have never gotten anybody to go with me before. www.flickr.com/photos/alanenglish/galleries/72157623766933867/

    - Oak Grove Campground - not much information available online, but this is a developed campground at the base of Pine valley mountain. Plenty of greenery, and only an hour away from Cedar City about 10 miles up the mountain from the Leeds exit.

Not sure of a third option - lots I can think of, nothing that seems particularly exciting.

I have a truck that will hold 6 if we get cozy, between me and another vehicle we could probably take everyone.

  2. My votes:

    -car camping sounds great!
-I would like to be back to Cedar by 5:00PM if possible. :)
-I'm okay with up to 2hour drive
-I will have my car, not ideal for conditions off paved road.

I support either of the options proposed, whatever works for the rest of the group.

  3. We can probably use my moms truck if it comes to it. How about we all throw out any ideas that we might have for locations. I have James' suggestions above, and a few from people before. And I can create another poll and we can be done with it. When I put the items on the poll I will try to be as descriptive as possible.

    Thanks

  4. I think indecision might be a sign of genius.

    Answers to the questions:
    - If I'm going backpacking I'd rather take more than an overnighter, so I'll say car camping.
    - Not really any time constraints for me.
    - I could handle a 2-hour drive.
    - I can't depend on my truck to get me back from church, much less camping, so I'll probably be riding with somebody anyway.

As for locations: I would submit we go somewhere we can see or do something. Camping in a forest is okay, but entertainment is pretty much limited to carving sticks. As much as it's a "been-there-done-that", Red Cliffs has places to run around and fall off of. (Probably want to leave your truck home, James, if we do that). Not that we'd probably want to go there -- there'd be a lot of people around, and it'd be hard for us to secure a campground this time of year -- just an idea of a place with something to do.

Other ideas: Snow Canyon, Cathedral Gorge.
